The Heart of the City:
Downtown Elgin

Downtowns are the heart of any city. They are the place where the community celebrates its special occasions. Their buildings tell their city's stories of resilience and change. They are home to independent businesses that sustain their community’s economy – whether that’s a local mechanic, a coffee shop, an insurance agent or a jewelry store.

While few downtowns are the retail centers they once were, Downtown Elgin is attracting new business in the areas of technology and the arts. Small, start-ups are attracted to downtown’s urban amenities and affordable rents that allow for growth and innovation. Arts-oriented retailers are attracted to its ecelectic arts community.

The city’s revitalization efforts are supported through the work of the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin – a National Main Street organization that works to enhance the economic vitality of downtown Elgin.
