Downtown Elgin

The Center of Everything

Downtown River Front

The heart of Elgin offers a unique sense of place for its citizens and visitors alike. Downtown Elgin's historic architecture provides solid character and its riverfront location promotes the value of our environment and natural resources. With a year round calendar of special events and our new Festival Park, Downtown Elgin is a center of activity for families to enjoy.

The City of Elgin’s downtown revitalization plan started along the Fox River – the historical birthplace of business and industry in Elgin. Since 2000, the city has invested more than $30 million in riverfront redevelopment, from the north end of downtown at Gail Borden Public Library to the south end at the Grand Victoria Casino, and more than $300 million in public infrastructure and quality of life amenities.

Housing to fit every style - and budget

Revitalization has rippled from the riverfront throughout the entire downtown. Three new residential developments – River Park Place, Fountain Square and Wellington Place – have brought city-style brownstones and condos into the residential mix to complement the upper-story loft apartments tucked throughout the downtown.
